The individual who has earned a black belt in the martial arts commands respect. This person has spent years training hard, honing their techniques, and developing discipline and endurance that is not only physical, but also mental. A black belt is tough and is focused. This level of belt has demonstrated that he or she has the qualities it takes to succeed, not just in the martial arts but also in every arena of life.

Of course, becoming a black belt in any martial art is anything but easy. That is the whole point. However, it is a mistake to assume that just because you are not a natural athlete or because you are not in good physical condition that you cannot get a black belt. In fact, with determination and perseverance just about anyone can achieve this level of expertise. You might have to change your lifestyle, and you will certainly have to work hard, but you can do it. This article will explain how.

The first step is to choose a martial arts school. Be sure to avoid "McDojos," schools that churn out black belts but that are of inferior quality and do not make you into a superior martial artist. A good warning sign is when a school promises to give you a black belt after a certain period of time. Since the school knows nothing about you when you sign up, how can they know that you will be ready for your belt after a year, four years, or whatever? These schools do you a disservice by not developing you into the best martial artist that you can be. It is a good idea to talk to the students at a school to see if they are satisfied and to ask them what they do and do not like about a school.

Once you've got a school, there's only two things left to do: #1 is to practice. #2 is to not quit. Practice is absolutely vital if you intend to go anywhere as a martial artist. Sure, there are some gifted people who can go into class and ace everything that is thrown at them without practicing, but the rest of us have to do some homework. If your instructor gives you something to work on, take it home and work on it, and the next time you come into class your instructor will notice that you have fixed what he was talking about and will be impressed. The more you practice, the better you will perform.

The other thing to do is to not quit. "A black belt is a white belt who never quit." Sticking with it is what martial arts is all about. It is guaranteed that there will be times when you feel like skipping class and giving up, but by keeping at it, you will prove your character and truly earn that nice shiny black belt.

Also, never sell yourself short or think that earning a black belt is not within your reach. When you watch black belts execute powerful or advanced techniques try to envision yourself doing the same. But always remember, those black belts were once beginners too. The difference is that they made black belt one of their main goals in life and stuck by it. That was the first critical decision that resulted in their success. Through the years, they kept telling themselves, “I will become a black belt.”

You, too, must do the same. Your true potential will never shine through until you fully believe in yourself and what you are capable of doing. Until you realize that you will be a black belt someday, your training will probably lack direction. More than that, it will be almost impossible to stay focused since you haven’t given yourself anything to focus on. No matter what you’re shooting for, it’s quite difficult to aim at a target that simply doesn’t exist. So first find your target, next take aim and then ?re! In this case, your target is black belt and you will become one.
